I have a couple of those that belonged to my father. Not in a box anymore. I remember him teaching me how to use them to install door lock sets. I don't think he used them for anything else.

I have his bit brace and auger bit collection. I also have a couple of those auger bit files. I need to dig that stuff out and see what condition it is in.

I have a couple sizes and they are indeed occasionally handy.

I don't think I've ever seen one in it's original box though. that's a pretty cool find!

I'm also wondering what the other small piece in the box with it is?

The full range of the adjustable drill bit is accomplished with two bits. The smaller one which you noticed, has a range of 7/8 to 1-3/4 inch while the larger one has a range of 1-3/4 to 3 inch.

While making some of the holders on my tool wall, I was constantly running across holes that I needed to drill where I didn't have the proper bit size. I ordered and received some really nice larger sized Japanese auger bits which I needed, but it is nice to have this ability to adjust to any hole size.
