The Baltic Birch I use is manufactured in metric so the 3/4" is 18mm.

Not sure if it's standard operating procedure, but when I was making a bunch of my record crates, I started to do my reference point off of the spoil board. The ply I was using wasn't all that consistent, so that allowed me to get more consistent thickness on the rabbets and more consistent through cuts.
And I wasn't dinging up the spoil board all that bad. Basically just lines you could see in it.
