Dave, I don't understand what you are calling the control box. I looked up images of a Mastercraft mini lathe and saw many different situations. What you are calling the control box, does it house only the on and off switch? Or does it have a variable speed switch with it?

Dave, I assume you mean a mini wood lathe? Maybe one of the many Chinese clones?
There are replacement boards on eBay. And most likely it’s a dc motor, so a ac speed control wouldn’t work.
Maybe you can you post some pics of it and what part you intend to bypass?
