And when down at bottom of the bore it's helpful to use an angled cuter with good side and end rake clearance to avoid the snatching you can get with wider tool bits hitting bottom.

That's a very attractive piece of timber, Chas. And thanks for the photos showing your method. Like you, I use Forstner bits to start things like this pencil holder. I also use one for pretty much all of my hollow forms.

Hadn't seen anyone talk about using a triangle cutter for cleaning up the bottom on something like this, looks like another really good idea!
