What are some good places to visit when visiting or traveling through your hometown?

I thought it might be interesting to see what places some of us might not have yet heard of that might be interesting to visit when traveling.

Locally, in my the area, we have a couple of trout farms and fishing resorts. West and to the South of me are several lakes and rivers. The white river in AR has good trout fishing and resorts.

North of me is the Laura Ingle Wilders Home & Museum, where the Little House on the Prairie books were written.

Obviously I'm close to Bass Pro in Springfield, MO, which has wild life and fishing museums, the store in itself is a destination to visit.

Branson, MO is the second country capitol. Lots of shows and attractions & Silver Dollar City for old time crafts and fun.

South of Branson is the College of the Ozarks, which is a school that students work for to help pay their way through college. The Ralph Foster museum is located on the campus, which on the front page for the museum many of you will recognize a certain car.

On the Arkansas side, southwest of Branson, is Eureka Springs, with lots of B&B's, crafts, & shopping. While there checkout the Thorncrown Chapel (https://thorncrown.com )

One place I visited as a teenager, and would like to revisit if I ever head through Nebraska, is Pioneer Village, in Minden, NE. Their site really doesn't do it justice. There are so, so many collections that the museum acquired, things from buttons, thimbles, and quilts, to steam engines and cars

taking a good look at those massive caves in kc, thats something to look at also. was for me, never seen anything like that in a huge city like kc.
Most of the older ones are used for storage and warehouse, There are ice rooms even that naturally cold used for cold storage. A friend that works for the owning company says they still digging limestone and other rock out 2 miles below many of those.

I finally had a chance to check out all the links in your post, Darren. Very cool stuff! Aside from the Laura Ingalls house, they were all new to me. I could spend days at the Pioneer Village. :thumb:

This thread has got me thinking...I'll bet just about everyone here has several relatively unknown things/places around their area that potential visitors might not know about. I know I could put together a pretty good list for the Albuquerque area. Do any of you other guys have any interest in adding to such a thread?

I was hoping others would post some, I like to see the lesser known places, but I’m sure there are lots of main ones I’ve never heard of either.

My wife and I went to the Thorncrown chapel many years ago. It was a windy day and sitting inside it was completely quiet. It was pretty surreal with the setting of being in the woods in a glass church and it being so quiet.

Cool, I'll dig around and finds some links and get something posted. Hopefully that'll motivate others to do the same. Do you suppose they should be in a separate thread or should we do one group thread? (I'm leaning toward doing separate threads to make them easier to search for later.)

then there is the gold field Ghost Town

and The Superstition Mountain Lost Dutchman Museum and the Elvis Chapel. The Chapel was used in the Elvis Movie Charro.

and a Trip to Tortilla Flats is always Fun

How about a Boat Trip on a a Steam Boat

the one I saw was massive, like a city, and it seemed like it was an auto dealership parking all the cars in there.

The Ford plant is just around the corner from there, they use it among many, many other places for holding areas for trucks and vans coming off the lines. They have full lots of trucks and vans parked all over the city, even as far south as where I used to live 40 minutes away.

Casa Fusco is available. Only minutes from the White and Norfork rivers, Bull Shoals lake and Norfork Lake. You wouldn't be the first Family member to visit. However, since I have become a bachelor the place looks like it and I'm a lousy cook. Nevertheless, the welcome mat is still out.

I can attest to the exceptional level of hospitality, tranquil surroundings, and excellent conversation. 👍👍

if you can deal with summer traffic long island has some of the best beaches, and there is a long coast of beaches. but thats not a reason to visit, forget broadway, forget the big apple, too crowded with tourists, long island has the best pizza in america, every zipcode has at least 2 or 3 top notch italian restaurants, and you will never find better bagels anywhere on planet earth then on long island or the outer boroughs on ny, like queens or brooklyn. yes, food is a reason to come here....our restaurants are top rated and me and elen have been to 40 different states, and yes, long island and ny food places are the best. you name the style food you want, its here, there are plenty of places to see, but its worth a trip just for food, especially if you want to try pizza or bagels. Ive taken bagels all up and down the east coast to bring friends and relatives when I visit them.
