I do it with a converter package that makes my hard drive (removed from old computer) work as an external hard drive. The output of this converter is then plugged into a USB port on the new computer, and it becomes an additional hard drive on that new computer. From there, it is a "copy and paste" session to move everything that I want from the old hard drive into the new computer. It's not the fastest way, but I can be more selective about what is copied and moved. I bought this converter package about 5 years ago from someone on Ebay and have no idea now who they were, but many sources were available and at different prices. I opted to buy one of what appeared to be better made and not the cheapest. So far, it has been used five or six times and has worked well for me.
