new salt and pepper mills

finally got around to rendering the walnut bowl blanks for the salt and pepper mills. i was surprised, when instead of the usual walnut brown, these blanks run the gamut of walnut colors. should make some interesting mills.

Started turning the bodies today. First, the salt mills, then the pepper mills (different heights, and the salt mills came up first). The bodies get turned, finished, and rewrapped in saran wrap until I have the time to drill them. Only 90 in the shop today.

If you got 20 years out of a belt on a Reeves drive lathe, I'd say that's a good run.

well, if this isn't a jesus wept moment, i don't know what is. got the new belts, and even though the are the same m-22, they are too small. i gave the gang at jet a call, and asked the obvious question. turns out i needed a different belt altogether. ordered it up on amazon, got two more of the right size in kevlar. they will be here between the 11th, and 13th...

Got the right belts on the 10th, then the real fun began. Got the top one spread wide, but the bottom one would not move for love or money. The fix-it guy who is helping me over the phone said to spray a bunch of wd-40 on the shaft area and the pulley, and it should open up with the wooden wedge.

When I still had my old Craftsman lathe with a Reeves drive, after facing the same struggle you're seeing now, I finally learned how to take the movable sheave off the shaft to re-install belts. The spring was held in place with a C clip and you have to be careful removing it or it'll send the spring flying across the shop at Mach OMG. After seeing someone on the Internet do it, I made myself a contraption that would compress the spring to relieve pressure on the C clip, and then allow me to remove the spring in a controlled manner. The primary materials were some all-thread, a few nuts & washers, and four short pieces of extruded aluminum 1" angle.

You might do some Googling to see if anyone has done something similar with your model of lathe. For me it was worth the small time cobbling together the sheave removal gadget because it made a near-impossible job relatively easy.

I wound up taking the outer half of the large wheel off. It too has one of those spring clamps. Wound up buying one of those pliers things to take it off. The fun part was getting the outer wheel all the way back on and clamped again. Switched on the beast, and ran it from slow to fast and back again. Changes speeds nice and smooth. Back in business again!!!!!!
