New Shop

That is what my shop looks like except my shop is 1/10 the size of his
That was my current /old shop, which also had a brewery, food storage, workout space, and a bunch of top be perfectly honest hoarded junk thrown in. We’re using the new space as staging during the move as it’s been letting us clean and prep a bit before moving to much stuff into the dwelling plus the turnaround time on trips is really good with “load the trailer, dump the load onto pallets in the giant shop”.

I’m eventually going to have to entirely evacuate this space as well as it was used as a kennel and there’s still more than a touch of dog left on the floor. So once we’re get everything here I’m going to move the pallets left over to the other adjacent small shop space and then pressure was the ever loving bejeez out of this space, fix up the power, etc and then move the tools back in for good. Ideally I’d have done all of that cleaning, etc first. But we’re still in the wet season and I was afraid it would be hard to get dry plus the timing isn’t perfectly ideal so being able to defer that part done to do it right seemed like an ok takeoff.

50 acres.

I live on long island, and until I visited another member on this site with 40 acres I really had no clue how to realize what a piece of property that big is actually that big.

congrats on the closing.

if I had a shop that size, id close off a certain portion, put in a small kitchen, flat screen, small bedroom area, bath room, and visit my wife once a week. you are a lucky man

Perhaps look into renting a floor cleaner machine, and add a sealer after it dries too. My dad was a fan of waxing the floors in his shop. They did seal up and seal well, swept up dust well, but they got kind of slippery when first done.

So I got to thinking about this some (I've been spending a lot of time painting my previous house to prep for sale which lends to a lot of time .. thinking..) and ended up looking it up. 50 acres is about 16% of Central park, or just under 10 manhattan city blocks.

I met one of the new "neighbors" the other day though (he lives a mile or so down the road but rents a shed on the timber property across the street from me) and he mentioned I didn't have much for neighbors there. I said "well I looked at the map and I reckon I have neighbors of some sort on all sides of me so we got neighbors all over" - I'm not entirely sure he's comfortable with me sense of humor yet. We'll get there.

Note to self and other interested parties.. 7’ tall 3’ wide and 12” deep shop cabinets made entirely out of 3/4” plywood are not only overbuilt they are also super heavy to move. Could go just a wee touch lighter next time!

I managed to get all of the big tools on the trailer yesterday. The sloped driveway that was sort of a curse for the last eighteen years was a blessing for loading because I was able to just slap together an 8’ ramp and have it be close enough to flat I could pretty much pallet jack everything on. I still had to lever jack things up to slide skids/homemade 4x4 pallets under them but that wasn’t too bad just take your time. Tomorrow I get to take everything off.., If all goes well it’ll “just” be lifting straps, 4x4 spreader bars, and the gantry crane and bobs your uncle.

If it goes poorly it was nice knowing y’all 😁 (Seriously that’sa joke.. it should be fine again planning to just go slow and steady and I have plenty of chain to be nice and out of the road).

It was rigged I tell yah!!

The jointer/planer slipped a touch on the way down and almost gave loml a heart attack but in the end everything made it to the ground all in one piece and that’s kind of the tail end of the big stuff. I still have to move the ceramic grill and the engine hoist I left so I can lift it but those are both relatively easy.

That's plenty of chains, as long as he goes [twang twang twang] "That ain't going anywhere."

Interestingly.. the one with all the chains is the one that had a bit of a slip sideways on the way down.. Probably because I forgot to slap it and say the magic words properly...

And .. most of the chains are actually on the hoist itself anyway hah.

I do need to get the smaller 2ton or maybe 1ton chain hoist for this setup - that's the 3 ton because that's what was in store at the time (I can move the 3ton over to the other shop).

Well we signed the sales agreement for the old place today, closing is on the 2nd of July.

Pretty happy with the deal it’s fsbo to a work acquaintance, nice guy and I hope he’s really happy here! I think we’re actually both trying a pretty good deal, he’s a bit under market, and I’m clearing about what I’d hoped to or maybe a wee touch more after commissions, which we don’t have to pay with the fsbo sale.

I also finished loading the last trailer load as well which I’m hauling down tomorrow. We have a bed and… not much else to pick up when we swing back up to turn over the keys. Actually we’re also going to harvest the garlic and shallots we planted last fall but that’s not really at the house so it only sort of counts lol.

We’ve been here since 2006 which is well over twice as long as I’ve lived anywhere else so moving is definitely a bit weird feeling. Looking forward to the new shops but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t going to miss old familiar just a little bit.
