Question on cutting out router table plate insert

no template, nor will I make one with curved corners. I believe when I get the bit jims way will work, unless ofcourse I mess up, i cant make any promises. twice today I put the wrong slides on the wrong drawer. no biggie, I ended today with drawers complete, all but one installed, not sure about tomorrow yet, maybe finish off last drawer and start some fronts, Ill work on table top when I get back after xmas week. again, I appreciate all the advice, anyone who doesnt use the accumulated knowledge on this board is foolish, as far as you have to go thru each bit of advice, weigh each one with what skill level one has, and then execute. Ive done it many times in the past, sometimes I just call someone here because Im too embarrassed to let the board know just how much inexperience I still have. seems I go to tackle something that seems simple, but since Ive never done it before, well, thats that.

No need to be embarrassed. Instead of calling someone, just post the question. Someone else might come along in the future with the same question, so they will also benefit from the knowledge. Plus, a lot of us might not be trying to tackle the same problem, but we can still all learn new things from the various answers. ;)

He didn't call me for that. He called just to chat - as we frequently do because of our long-standing personal friendship.
I don't remember which one of us brought the subject up, but all I did was explain how I'd made several of them over the years.

It was easier to talk about it than it will be draw/write it out, but I'll see what I can do - sometime later.

seems Im back to my old self again, buzzing through the project, I decided to stop today because this is my only project currently and it has to keep me occupied. got the drawer fronts cut today, put a back on the unit, all drawers are made and installed, put an oak edge around from edge of plywood, had strips of oak even too small for boards, so I sliced it thin.

I got the cheapest set of bits I could find, and it came....so using the practice board, I cut in again and like jim told me, the angle is identical. now all I have to do is execute the cuts accurately on the table top melamine and Im almost home.
the bit is the only thing I had to spend money on for this build .

drawer knobs will be from a 50 year old set of kitchen cab inets, I will paint them red or blue, maybe red blue and white to be patriotic.***

Ive been going through all my junk drawers and figuring on how to make the fence. I have a few pieces of track I found. when I cleaned behind the mitre saw, something I do once every few years I found 2 small pieces of track buried in the saw dust. must have fallen off a shelf years ago, and forgotten about.

shop is closed now till we get back home.

*** on a side note, if someone lives on long island, all they have to do is go around on sunday nights, when trash goes out, and they would find enough old furniture, enough hardware, and an assortment of discarded steel pieces to support some builds. I have found solid oak head boards which Ive cut down, posts, tables chairs, facebook offers a ton of free furniture out here, and if one is handy enough, for pennies alot of old furniture is for sale at a fraction of the price when new. e nough hardware including 35 mm cup hinges, regular hinges, drawer slides, knobs, handles, decorative pieces, discarded boards of lumber, usually shorts, and if I needed, I would never have to ever purchase fire wood as long as I live. only problem is you have to cart and schlep it all yourself. but its out here, but I no longer have a truck so Im done with that.

I agree with Vaughn we can all stand to learn. Often in my business a client will say "this may be a dumb question..." to which I answer "the only dumb question is the one you don't ask"

there can be 6 different opinions, and choosing one might insult someone. as Ive learned here over the years, some people choose to walk on eggshells, me certainly not included. I dont want to offend anyone and go with a set of directions that may differ from them completely. I dont think Jim minds and if he laughs at me, at least he doesnt do it in front of me...hehehehe. late next week Ill post up the pic of the finished top once I execute the cuts.

I'll be back at it Friday and will post results

Right now we are in one of the nicest hotel rooms we've ever stayed in

Presidential suite in windcreek Bethlehem pa

3 tvs. 2 bathrooms 1200 sq feet
Sad we are leaving tomorrow

Successful so very happy

I get by with a little help from my friends
Heard that somewhere

My first try failed
I used ace hardware carpet tape and the guide board moved and that was that
Flipped the board and used my 5 dollar discount and got frog tape carpet tape held much better

Set it up as Jim explained
Cut some half inch ply strips and inserted after initial cut for plate outline
Recut through and done

Sometimes I need a little kickstart to get my brain started
Not sure why this seemed so perplexing to me

Board did slip a tiny bit but I caught it
One pic shows the tiny offcut which won't matter

Went scavenging thru all the old tossed out knobs and pulls and had enough of these old knobs
Was on phone with grandson and he told me to paint them red so I did
I was praising him for his potty training and promised tomorrow I must bring him a train set for his progress
Just fitted them drawers need to come apart and sanding and maybe a router edge
Gotta stop today this is where I got

The drawer on the left was an after thought so it's not same height to match other side nor do I care
The more drawers the more one can hide

After I finish drawers I'll work on a fence

I had the same type of slip when I routed mine out. Used a little auto body filler with the router plate in place and it is flush all around now.

I dont think that tiny slip will be noticable if I dont point it out . it wont effect the table use at all. the first attempt was a bad slip, but I used old carpet tape and it didnt adhere well, the new frog tape worked much better.

The cabinet is finished
Put some edge band tape around top
Rounded over drawer fronts did some sanding
I'll make a fence next year and be done
I'll put a quarter inch piece of Masonite on top to use as small work surface so I don't stain or damage top
My guess is this router table will get next to nothing in use but it's here if anyone in family needs it
That's a powerful Milwaukee router can handle all my needs
