Reclaimed Space

I had some friends here on the weekend helping with some farm work. Young, cheerful, smart, able bodied fellows who, if there was a moment’s pause, would be looking around for something to clean or tidy up. Among other jobs was the milling out of 230 plywood side gussets for 100 new apple storage bins, which has become an annual event. A pile of salvaged 1865 pine floor boards had been sulking in the barn floor since last spring and the guys carefully organized them up in the hay loft with some other vintage material.
By the time they left, the precious big open space in the barn floor had been largely reclaimed, even “dusted” with the leaf blower and I am resolved to keep it that way.
Just looking at it puts me in a happy place. 🙂

PS. Yes, the big bandsaw restoration awaits, but we’ve been quietly researching and studying others’ work. IMG_2338.jpeg

That looks like a great work shop space.
It sure is Tom, but it’s an ongoing struggle to keep it clear.
It’s very convenient for breaking down sheet goods or assembly of larger pieces and opening the big doors usually creates a good airflow for sanding and other dusty or smelly work. The space is unheated, of course, but comfortable enough for eight or nine months of the year in our climate.

Sorry, but I have to ask. What is the thing the arrow is pointing to?

Hi Paul
That is the cast iron frame of a 36 inch Cowan bandsaw from the late 1800’s. We saved it from an old property a few years ago, where it was headed for scrap metal. We have serious plans to restore it to working order, but we’ve been delayed by life events. Stay tuned!
Thanks for asking🙂
