Rings and Boxes

Made these for the granddaughters ... three down, two more to go. For those done, one loves volleyball, one loves ballet, one loves swimming and sharks. So, why not go with what they love. Boxes I made. A very good friend of mine made the rings for me/the gals. Wood is white oak, walnut for the shark box, foam insert, acrylic paint, clear lacquer finish. Ring bodies are stainless steel, metal figure inlays with acrylic overlay .. and they glow in the dark.

Each ring has four inserted images .. at 12, 3, 6 and 9 positions .... for the VB player, two volleyballs, two figures serving, .. for the ballarina, two ballet shoes, two ballarinas ... for the shark lover, two great whites, two hammer heads.
So far, they have been a real hit.
Thanks for looking.

Very nice. I have made rings using veneer heavily soaked to be very flexible, and then wrapped around the ring diagonally to completely cover the metal ring inside. Several layers of veneer were used for each ring, glued together with Titebond II or the slow drying version. When I had a lathe, I made the rings out of wood instead of metal, then covered them with the wood veneer. Several coats of sealer, light sanding, and then about 5 coats of clear waterproof oil based poly was the finishing process.

I don't know how, but my photos of the rings seem to have disappeared in the last ten years since I last made them, so I can't show you any of them. If I do find these photos in my files I will post them, but haven't been able to when I was writing this post.

But I have made quite a few boxes, mostly using 8 & 12 mm Baltic Birch plywood. I was once told "You can't make box joints or dovetail joints in plywood", but I have done it many times using Baltic Birch or the equivalent other kinds now available, and I do have photos of many of these, so I'll attach some of them.
