Darren,
No paint mask. A light sanding after the flat and 3D work with a nylon pad and brush, then cut the letters, then a light sanding over them, then the paint, then a sanding on the flat surface above them. Worked like a charm. Hope this is clear.

I did use a nylon brush and pad to scuff off the fuzzies. Works great.
