I get an email from Woodcraft.I sort of got excited cause I have needed a good vise for a long time...But the reviews are poor about this vise..

This price would be right for me.But with reviews it's not good.

Anybody got an idea on a good vise??? I have always needed a good vise for working with the flutes and other things sometimes...Thought about sort of re purposing a bench vise.I do have 2 of those. One which is not in use but like the idea of this smart vise where you can put it away when not needed

At that price point there are a lot of choices. what is holding you up? Does it need to be a self contained portable solution? Can it be bench mounted? For flutes and other non-square shaped things held at angles, something like a parrot vise can be handy but, does not do the jobs of typical vise hardware.

It kind of reminds me of a moxon bench on bench albeit a bit flatter than most, I've seen lots of homemade versions of those using various not-to-expensive screw systems re-purposed from various jacks, lifts, hoists, and occasionally even a bench vise screw :D I've been kind of wanting to do that to elevate the work above my regular bench top a smidge for carving work, but as per usual have gotten locked in design paralysis after seeing some of the tilting/swiveling carvers benches which look.. pretty cool.. but probably overkill (although the tilting part looks super useful) - essentially benchtop versions of the veritas carvers bench http://www.leevalley.com/us/wood/page.aspx?p=31153&cat=41637

The parrot vise like Glenn mentioned seems like it could be real handy for things like flutes? Not sure about the specific work holding requirements. A lot of people also modify those to increase the rotational axis - garret wade has already done so - link provided not as an endorsement as I haven't seen theirs in person, but as an illustrative point in how the mods are usually done https://www.garrettwade.com/ultimate-versatile-vise.html
