Slight Distraction

When we moved int our home twelve years ago the porch posts had been replaced with plain 4x4 treated timber. The second summer after moving in I built these fluted column wraps from 1x pine lumber to get a more classical look. After ten seasons they were in need of a new paint job so they got a thorough power washing this spring and I have three of five repainted. I removed the old base boards and I’m in the process of replacing them with resin, hoping they hold up a little better. Once I get done with these I’m hoping to get back to the Queen. Anne window. Ah, the joys of home ownership...

When I built my shop (garage) in 2002 I trimmed out the garage doors with wood - primed both sides. Still had some rot after 16 years.

Last year I tore it all out at replaced it with PVC. Hopefully it's a done deal.

I do like the fluted pillars - very classy.

Honestly, if i had it to do over again I would be tempted to do them entirely from PVC but for now replacing the bases should help. I replaced all the flooring with Azek composite a few years ago after I got a great deal on a discontinued color. I had to go to three different Home Depot stores to get enough to do the whole porch but it was worth it. Next part of the project is to take down all the vinyl soffit material from the ceiling and reinstall it correctly. you can see in the photos how bad it sags in several spots. while I have the ceiling exposed I plan to run some wiring and add can lights and a couple ceiling fans.
