So you say No Cash

Yeah, cash will eventually go by the wayside. I think that a lot of it has to do with robbery prevention. Think about it. No one in their right mind, or demented mind, is gonna rob a place that has no cash. It's a shame, because I have having to enter in my account register little tiny charges like $2-3.
Just think, they will probably charge you a transaction fee every time you make a purchase. So if you spend $2-3 and get charged 40 cents for the privilege just how often are you going to buy a Coke and a Nab?

Well, they are desensitizing the current population now. Few people carry cash. It does eliminate employee theft. EXCEPT, this morning I heard on the radio two stories, one the lady was in charge of accounting and stole $41,000.00 over a 2 year period. Now, the second one was a guy hired as a bagger for a Kroger store and he stole $1,980,000.00 in a 2 week period! Created a bogus charge account and entered returns and bogus lottery ticket numbers. I didn't understand nor did I spend much time thinking about it, find it ironic then to find this discussion going on.

How can this not become political? It is 100%. But I may be the only one that feels that,, well never mind as a Marine Patriot, VN vet, Christian I cannot discuss issues of today' world without getting political.. So maybe we need a political forum added or..? I am so political that I did not respond to the thread the other day about covid vacs because it is a political issue to me. So I will bow out and respond no further to these types of discussions on here. But I respect your right to have them. Will not make me go away, I like the wood working stuff on here too much.

I'm seeing a 3.5% fee at restaurants when using a credit card. I'm also seeing the 3.5% fee automatically added with a deduction for cash. So if you are getting a 5% cash back from the credit card company and the vendor is charging 3.5% to use the credit card is the 1.5% difference worth the use of a card.

What Steve ^^^ said.

This trend toward carrying a debit or credit card versus carrying cash is NOT going away. The opposite is true. It's the younger generation who will decide for us what the trend will be (they outnumber us), and they not only don't carry cash, they have their cards built into their cell-phones.

So, given that it's not going to change, and knowing from 3+ decades of self employment in retail/service that business owners typically build that cost into their pricing, the only really profitable response is to use a card that gives the best "rewards", however they may be calculated. Otherwise all you're doing by insisting on paying cash is allowing the seller to keep the extra margin at no extra cost on your particular sale.

.... just an opinion from a cheapskate ....

it AIN'T gonna happen - going back to cash.

I am old enough to remember the ?good ole days? - cash was king
I went to the bank to deposit my pay - that is when the bank was open.
I paid the bills with a paper check an envelope a return address label and a stamp
I could go to a brick and morter building to pay bills with cash
so on and so on

Today I do all my banking online and pay all my bills online
I use cc's as much as possible - to get the points
I pay no interest - I pay my cards 100% every month
I use Quicken and I monitor my budget daily

I save all the points onto a linked Amazon gift card.
I have bought large items with points only
Drone
large TV
32" computer moniters

I don't think I am "younger generation"

No - sorry - I don't use cash unless I really need to - not very often.

My last visit to KC I went to two different McDonalds for a drink and breakfast. Both had replaced the human with a voice automated AI ordering system. I'm not going to lie, I've been through these lines dozens of times over the years and gotten the "Hello, please wait"....a minute later, "How can I help you". The AI didn't wait, was a bit slower on response, but the lines were noticeably faster and displayed up your order on the screen for confirmation. I told my wife that the only thing that would make this faster is if is cashless checkout, swipe and go.

So from the business perspective, especially a chain like that, efficiency is king. They may still take cash, but you're going to have to go inside and wait in a line for someone to get to you.

If I recall the Duncan donuts in KC was also a kiosk ordering, no human unless you asked. I seem to recall a line for cash only still, but they may just be trialing credit only here yet.

We have a relatively new Chain that has used this as part of their business model. It's called Angie's Lobsters They sell lobster rolls and are super efficient. They only have drive through, no dinning room. You drive up to a card machine with a speaker next to it. You tell them your order and swipe your card. Then you drive up to the window and in less than a minute they hand you your order. your lobster roll and fries are in a cardboard boat in a plain brown bag with No napkins, there is a napkin dispenser so if you want one you can get it. Your drink come in a plastic cup with a drinkable lid, no straw. They have their own wharf in Maine where they buy the lobster direct from the fishermen and process the lobster their for shipping to Arizona. They have a limited menu they sell lobster rolls w/ fries and a drink for $9.99. They pride themselves on being super efficient and keeping down their overhead. It seems to work since they are opening new stores around the valley.
