Necessity is the mother of invention...

I just bought a nice dustless drywall sanding system, and it works great, but I want to use it with my midi instead of my shop vac. The adapters that came with it came close but wouldn't work with the Festool hose on my midi. So, I headed to Home Depot and picked up a foot of 1.5" ID vinyl pool tubing.

When I got home, I cut a piece about four inches long, and it fit fine over the Festool hose end and the tool adapter. However, the clamps wouldn't compress it enough to make a good seal because it's pretty stiff. I put my brain into gear, and this is what I came up with.

I boiled some water in a small sauce pan and dropped the tubing into it. After a few minutes, I pulled it out and used scissors to cut four notches in each end of the tube. Then, I slid the clamps on, put the tube over the connectors, and tightened the clamps. It works perfectly!

Nice solution!

Not quite related, just triggered an old memory. On my first CNC I wanted to put a dedicated vacuum hose on it for the 5 gallon shop vac I bought for it. Trying to save money I bought a 1 1/2” sump pump hose, which looked to be similar somewhat similar in design.

I quickly found out that they were not similar. When a large volume of air is sucked through a sump pump hose, it makes a deafening screeching sound, like a very high pitched train whistle or 100 small toddlers that have just had the candy taken right out of their hands.

Sort of like an elk call in reverse? :D
