We have had a very mild and pleasant spring and early summer here. All that is changing as a we have a stretch of excessive heat coming. Well at least it is a dry heat and it cools off at night.

I have been busy weed whacking and in general fire wising the property to prepare for the dry season. The chance for wildfires around here will really jump now. This excessive heat could not come at a worst time with the 4th of July tomorrow. Locals would for the most part not even consider shooting off fireworks but we will be buried in tourists this weekend. A lot of them leave their brains at home when they come to visit.

We’ve been a bit of the opposite, usually getting dry by now here, but have rain in the muggy forecast for a while. The hay is usually done by mid June, but between rain and equipment repairs he’s a few weeks behind

Down in the valley they had their first cut of hay and alfalfa about the 3rd week in June. Only a few fields have not picked up their rolled bales. I need to pay better attention to how many cuts they get in a season. It is interesting to see how time can be measured by the activity of the hay farmers.

We usually get a cutting in June and a lesser productive one in mid to late August, which is a lot of Johnson grass mostly. He lets it dry and gas off a bit longer on the second cutting due to it being Johnson grass.

40 degree difference between daytime highs and nighttime lows...wow.....almost like a desert. but Im guessing its a high altitude? one thing Iv e noticed when travelling out west into higher altitudes is the temp difference between day and night. on long island, we see maybe a 20 degree difference in summer high and lows on one day.

We haven't had rain here in NC for about 2 1/2 weeks, except for a few big drops last Saturday. The corn crop here is all brown and the farmers are hurting. Temps the last few days have been in the 70's at night and high 90's every afternoon. High humidity every day too, but no, or nearly no, clouds. Just Summer humidity haze. A rain storm did pass to the North of us yesterday, but not a drop here.

Well, this got fixed Sunday evening. A bit late for the corn crops, but my grass is green again. A significant rain finally reached us. I have no idea how much we got, but the grass is happy again.

Our excessive heat warning continues out West. It is really not too bad as long as you get up early to work or play. I am fortunate that I am near the high mountains where the cool air flows down to us during the night. Also we live up on a hill and get a good breeze.

I spent 3-1/2 hours playing pickleball in the morning. I have to admit it got a little toasty near the end. Our only real concern is that the excessive heat has caused a extreme fire danger.
