What did you use for the color?
I use Behlen's alcohol based dyes, liming and metallic waxes. The finely sanded bare wood is dyed with as many coats as necessary to get a uniform color. Then I apply a wipe on poly; allow it to dry and then wipe the pieces down with either the liming wax or metallic waxes. Buff with a coarse cheesecloth to remove the excess wax and VOILA'!

P.S. Normally I would use a brushing lacquer but you can't use that over an alcohol dye without getting some bleeding.
