The item in the pictures that follow was found in a box lot of miscellaneous tools at a disposal auction for a bankrupt furniture factory.
The wooden body looks to be made from walnut and is 5 ¾” long, 1 ¾” wide and 1” tall. The walnut body is clad in a steel shoe that is affixed to the wood with 4 small screws into the bottom. The steel shoe wraps around one end of the walnut body and two more screws are used attach it to the nose of the walnut body
There is, what appears to be, a piece of a ¾” pipe clamp. There is some well-worn red paint remaining on this piece. It is attached to the wood body with a round head bolt that passes through the wood and metal and is held in place with a nut on top. Two more small rods are riveted to the top of the pipe clamp piece and end in the walnut body. The 1” diameter hole is internally threaded to receive threaded pipe. It looks to be ¾” NPT.
There is, what appears to be, a plane knob affixed to one end of the walnut body with either a screw or a bolt. This knob is on the end of the walnut body upon which the shoe has been wrapped around at 90 degrees. I have not removed it to determine what it is.
On the bottom there is a rectangular slot in the metal shoe 1 5/16” long x 11/16” wide. Centered in the slot a ½” hole has been bored into the wooden body to accept the round head bolt that is used to affix the pipe clamp piece. On both sides of the slot in the metal shoe there are two dented areas which are 5/16” square and 3/16” deep. These “dents” are not centered on the slot.
The only identifying marks that can be seen are on the piece that appears to be part of a pipe clamp. One on side it reads “600-A” and C.T. CO. On the opposite side it reads “H” with a circle around the “H” and “Made in U.S.A.”
(The lens cap that appears in some of the pictures is not part of the item. It was just handy for propping up the mystery object for a better view.)
Any ideas what this thing is and could have been used for?
