What wood is this ?

So a friend of mine asked me to make her this serving tray. But honestly I have never seen this species before. Any idea what it may be ?

Hard to tell from that photo, but hickory or hard maple would be my best guess, both have whiter sap woods like that.

Whenever I need to determine what a piece of wood it, I go to this website. It doesn't always let me exactly identify it, but gets me close.

Add another vote for hickory. Even if the tray is made out of some other species, it should be pretty easy to replicate with hickory.

Not joking here....did you crave BBQ when you cut it? Had some hickory a couple of years back and you could smell it when you cut it!
