Never been into one. Started turning a year ago. That's what I thought also. Kinda like a box of chocolates!

Yeah, it's hard to tell until you get inside of it. The burls I've turned have gone both ways...some good and some not so good. As far as the value of that burl, I'm not sure what I'd tell your friend. Maybe "let's both cut it down and if there's anything good in it I'll make you something out of part of it."
