I've been busy!
I'm making good progress on retrimming my entire house with shaker-style trim. I've been buying rough-sawn poplar and milling it to 1x3 and 1x4 for the new trim.
I also plan on building a Murphy bed for the guest bedroom. Yesterday, I called a local supplier to get prices on Baltic Birch plywood and was shocked by the prices. For 4x8, they want $120 for 3/4", $90 for 1/2", and $60 for 1/4".
I live about 20 miles north of Detroit, and have been dealing with Toledo Plywood for years, so I gave them a call. Their prices are $80 for 3/4", $60 for 1/2", and $35 for 1/4"! For that much of a savings, I hooked up the trailer and hit the road. It's only a 90-minute run to Toledo.
I got down there and grabbed 4 sheets of 3/4" and 2 sheets of 1/2". While there, I discovered that they sell bundles of 10' 13/16" S2S Poplar in random widths for $2.65 per board foot. I've been driving for an hour to my mill and buying rough-sawn for $3.75. I was out of Poplar and planning on making a run to the mill tomorrow. I grabbed a 146 b.f. bundle that is full of pretty wide stock, and even the little bit of narrow in it is about 7". This should be enough for me to completely finish the job.
In the end, it was WELL worth the extra 30-minute drive. I saved myself a ton of money and work by not having to mill rough stock. All in all, it was a good day!
I've got a guy coming this afternoon to pick up these five big bags of shavings. I don't know what he's going to use them for, but it's better than throwing them away.
