Don't know how many responses I'll get out of this :D But just wondering...
What are your top 5 favorite bands/artists and why? Do they influence you if you play an instrument? If you can't narrow it down to just 5 then feel free to add on :) Vaughn I know you have been playing the guitar for years so you better chime in here!

Stones, Led Zepellin, Aerosmith, more recently, Bowling for Soup, my newest fav, Alkaline Trio, but only their newest cd, not the
older one.

the list is too limited, cause ya got the Beatles, Monkies, Red Hot Chili Peppers,.........and I always like to sing anything by Axle Rose.

Motzart to Metal for me; the side effects from being a music major in college. I think we have some other old rockers on here besides Vaughn and I. If you're looking for stuff to listen to it might be fun to start a "music you don't hear on the radio" list :headbang:, they're always a kick. Just listen to radioparadise.com for a few hours. I have connected with all kinds of artists I was unaware of thanks to those guys.

On the pop side:
John Denver
Beatles
Dave Clark 5
Beach Boys
Byrds
Nearly anything from the late 50's through 69.

On the classic side:
Mozart
Beethoven
Gershwin
Bach
Rachmaninoff

Only 5 right?

I'm like Glenn...I'd have a hard time narrowing it down to five. I like a little of everything, although speed/death metal doesn't really do much for me, and neither does most rap.

I'm real tired of most "classic" rock because it's been so overplayed on the radio, but I like a lot of the older progressive stuff (Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Kansas, etc.). I also like a lot of the old "horn" bands like Chicago, Tower of Power, Chase, etc.

My current tastes run all over the map. Among some of the more recent stuff I've picked up on iTunes:

Conjure One
Silversun Pickups
My Morning Jacket
Doves
The New Pornographers
Death Cab for Cutie
Rodrigo y Gabriela
School of Fish
Evanescence
Breaking Benjamin
Catherine Wheel
Guster
The Killers
Nitin Sawhney
Gnarls Barkley
James McMurtry
Patty Griffin
Porcupine Tree
The Cardigans
Tina Dico
Venus Hum
Imogen Heap
Poe
R.L. Burnside
Medeski, Martin & Wood

And my favorite radio station is www.radioparadise.com. A very eclectic, but well thought-out mix. Everything from Sinatra to World Music to Russian Bluegrass bands.

This should be a fun thread to watch. ;)

Figures that they'd make somebody that can't count an Administrator here. Just like management. What with his music backbround, you'd think he'd only be able to manage ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR.:D

Since I can only do FIVE
John Scofield
Jeff Beck
Django Reinhardt
Paco De Lucia
Joni Mitchell

I'm another like Vaughn who has listened to the classic rock for so long that its worn out. I was a garage band rocker in my late teens and still like the rock music of the late 60's, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Buffalo Springfield, Crosby Stills Nash, etc. But in the last 10 years I've been confined to a seat behind a steering wheel for most of every day so at some point I stumbled onto KRCL, http://krcl.org/listenlive.htm . It's an independent station in Salt Lake City that plays the most diverse and non-typical music I've ever heard. You can listen online so if you get a chance try it out. You'll get to hear music from bands you've never heard of, I guarantee. And they post their play list online so you check out what you've heard.

I the shop cd player right now....

The Pouges
Drive By Truckers
Charlie Parker
Willie Nelson
Smashing Pumpkins

next up....

Peter Paul and Mary
Oscar Peterson
Johnny Cash
The Cure
Soundtrack to O'Brother Where Art Thou

As much as I would like to bury my head in the past, I must admit music has changed since the 50's. Whether it has improved is a matter of perspective.
However, modern rock music, even though we don't listen to it, is a matter of respect in our family.
Our son was a very talented writer. To supplement his income he wrote promotional material and reviews on rock bands.
His favorite band was Everclear with Punkin' Head a close second.
He was close friends with the members of Everclear.
We played music from those groups at his wake (very softly) after he died suddenly in 1996.
Everclear dedicated their next album 'So Much For The Afterglow' to him.
Sorry for the digression.

With a little musical background but not a musician and one haveing wide and varied music taste There are many that I enjoy. I love great guitar especially acoustic but will listen to everything for Spanish Guitar to Heavy Metal. Not much into the hiphop sceen. I have seen close to a thousand shows over the years so here are just a few that I really enjoy.

Of course in Texas and if you are a fan of Texas Rhythm and Blues no one sends shivers down my spine like the guitar work of the late great Stevie Ray Vaughn. Another Texan that probably no one hear has herd of but is pretty critically acclaimed for his acoustic guitar work is a guy named Monte Montgomery. If you can find is acoustic version of Little Wing on the Internet it is worth a listen. I don't care for his song writing but his talent is without question a true guitar great. Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits) is also amazing. The late Great Randy Rhodes from Ozzy fame is fabulous. The late Micheal Hedges is also fabulous. Steve Winwood whom I have seen twice is still one of the best pure musicians I have ever seen. David Bowie which I have seen once ranks up there with one of the best shows And I saw Blues Traveler in a bar. They played for 3 hours and there were fewer than 200 people there. Dick dale the king of surf guitar is a great show I have seen him at least 6 times, and then there is the late Link Ray the godfather of Surf Guitar. I saw him shortly before his death. I have a picture of me wearing links leather jacket and sun glasses with his arm around me. Kind of funny I am 6 feet tall and link is about 5'5" tall His jacket really did not fit very well. Angus Young (AC/DC) is just pure energy on stage he never stops moving.

So many more and so many more shows to see. Every one listed I have seen at least once. With so many I wish I could see again but will never happen because of their unfortunate deaths.

Now that is a list! Wow I was not expecting that many of you guys to respond as quickly to that :) I'm really liking all the diversity. I too am with all of you that go from classical to metal. I listen to almost everything, especially if someone suggests something I'll always give it a chance and check it out :thumb: Except most country and new R&B  My dad has a collection of ~4,500 records ranging anything from Leadbelly to Michael Jackson to The Who so I've always been trying to learn since I was a youngin, but still tons to listen to! Love the classic rock although agree with the radio ruining it.

Sorry about only 5, but I didn't think this many people would respond :thumb: Feel free to add! By giving a specific number I figured it would make you think REALLY hard about your choices :):):)

My absolute number 1, and I'll probably get made fun of for this, is Coldplay. I've been a huge fan and greatly inspired for numerous reasons. Also, Not that I've been to hundreds of concerts, but the ones I have been to including Coldplay 4 times, these guys blow the rest out of the water and put on one amazing show. They are also inspired by The Arcade Fire.. check em out!

Next I'd have to say a band called Muse. A couple years ago they became a little known around the USA because of their single off their latest cd but I think that cd is the worst of all of theirs. The first 3 albums rocked. Kind of a weird band but they have a mix of some heavier rock with kind of a Scifi sound with classical piano and the lead singer, pianist, guitarist Matthew Bellamy can really whip out the falsettos (when he's not screaming :))

The Killers. Getting into them a lot lately. Pretty much love all their stuff. And is it just me or do they kind of remind you of The Cars? Especially with the synthesizer effects...?

I'll finish it off with Pearl Jam and The White Stripes.

If I were to add on I'd throw in Queen, Zeppelin, Supertramp, Smashing Pumpkins, and many more actually so I'll stop

This is fun though, keep it going! It's interesting to see the variety

Good question Westley! I've got a lot of new listening to do.

Though I did kind of expect to see Stevie Ray Vaughn mentioned, I never thought anyone else listened to Dick Dale!:thumb: We're in a small minority Alan.:D I'll have to check out Monte and Link! One group I didn't see listed was one of my favorites - Cake. I think they are an acquired taste though. The others are Joe Walsh, The Who, Eric Clapton, Louis Armstrong, etc. etc.

My early years I remember listening to my Grandfather practice every day. He played trumpet in the Philadelphia Orchestra under Ormandy. So a lot of classical music brings back early memories. I can't listen to Copland's "Fanfare for the Common Man" without getting choked up.

Finally! someone mentions clapton :D

I am abnormally fond of Slowhand ... It's probably unhealthy ... lol

Okay ... so ...

1. Clapton
2. SRV
3. Buddy Guy
4. Muddy Waters
5. John Lee Hooker
..
6. Freddie King
7. T-bone Walker
8. Robert Junior Lockwood
9. ... i could go on but this should give you an idea of the genre

Someone mentioned Leadbelly in there - good form! Oddly enough, The White Stripes did a pretty good rendition of Death Letter on their De Stijl album. They're a little weird, but Jack does a decent job with his covers, IMHO.

Jack Falk did an incredible rendition of When Things Go Wrong that I enjoy.

I like that Monte Montgomery fella - i'll be looking to more of him.

Guy Davis did a FANTASTIC version of walkin' blues on WJL's birthday show.

Alright ... you guitarists ... if you haven't found him already, I highly suggest you seek out all the Youtube videos of Tommy Emmanuel.

While you're at it, give the new Roy Rogers a listen, too - Roy Rogers and the Delta Rythm Kings. He's got an interesting sound with his slide guitar.

Sheesh, i could go on and on ... Roy Buchanan ... Ronnie Earl ... Benois King ...

but then again ... i could say everything above with one name... Robert Johnson :)

I do have to say music is something I am very narrow minded about. I will listen to only what I like. My tastes run to mostly Ballads. My all time favorite singer is Lara Fabian. She sings in English, French & Italian. I'll listen to the voice of the singer & can tall after 15 seconds if I like the voice. If not I'll never listen to them. My wife can put on her claypton, beatles, stones, etc... I just tune them out It helps being half deaf. :D
