Well I have notice a number of confessions here recently mostly related to boo boos on machines. Mine has to do with drywall.

For those of you who have followed my thread of my workshop build and interior finish, you will know that I have put up two layers of drywall and green glue in between to soundproof my workshop as much as possible.

Well doing this on your own, with the aid of a drywall lift, those 11 ft lengths of 5/8" drywall are heavy. So when you get one up and in place with all the glue on you are so delighted to have achived it safely you forget what you had behind it.

I covered up my 220v 20amp receptacle that i had put up for my dust collector.

Initially I thought I had forgotten to put the receptacle in it place. But then I went back to my records (pictures of my electrical work before drywall and with insulation. That is how I found it. Here is a picture of the repair.my stidpid mistake of 2008.jpgdust collector receptacle prior to drywall.jpg

Had to pull back the drywall which by now the green glue had turn to very sticky goop. Managed to find exactly where it was and cut out a piece to let it through. :D

Well no hands were hurt in this process only my ego was a little bruised.:)

I'm glad you go it fixed. And hey, we all do things like that. My question is: What is this green gooo that makes walls more sound proof?

Glad it worked out.
If it were me, I can't handle those 11' hunks of drywall alone anymore. So, I would have gotten help. And, that would have meant two of us would have felt doubly stupid.

Hi Jon

I came across this product when i was researching how to keep the shop quiet due to North Neighbour. It is soup like when you apply it to the back of the second layer of drywall. Then it cures and turns sticky but not dry. Essentially what it does is produce a very flat sticky bead between the drywall ( the bead is in the pattern that you squiggled it on..random). The principle is that the walls all act as baffles of a loudspeaker. So when you have this double sandwich and sound hits it, the sound discovers a large mass that it has to move. The flex (mico instantaneous flex) produced by the sound is dampened in the walls and dissapated in the glue in the form of heat. All the research I did not this convinced me it was the easiest and quickest way to go and still have walls I can hang things on. If my memory serves me well it costs about $16 per tube. I spent around $400 on my whole shop. That is ceilings and walls. Still have some to do when I do the second layer in certain areas.
Dont forget I also have my 6" of Roxul (green insulation).

The weak spots are the windows, my canoe trap door, and the main door. But I have done the best I can to absorb and subdue as much of the sound as possible. I dont think NN can ask for more and this approach has brought much credit from the Town inspectors.

For those in Canada this product is available locally from a company in Missisauga that specialises in sound proofing. They also have PVC adhesive mat that I will buy some of in the future and apply to certain loose flexibal panels of my machines to dampen their vibration for my own sanity.

When I am done with my shop I plan to use a similar approach on the ceiling in my basement and avoid the noise of home theatre penetrating the whole house.

Allen after having grown up with a father that did not communicate with the neighbors I have tried to do things a little differently and try to ensure peace. I have had enough of conflict after living where I came from. So there is a price to peace, I would rather pay it upfront. But it did not work in this case.

Fine looking work there !!!!!!!!!!

Hey Rob if this was the only screw up you had then I think you've come out smelling good :thumb:, I know that 5/8" sheet rock is a killer . I was wondering why you didn't go with 1/2" sheet rock it would have been a little easier to deal with ........anyhow you've done good .:thumb:.......Marshall
