As mentioned in a previous thread, I am using water based Polyurethane to protect my wood pieces. Is there an option that would be a better protection and maybe give a better finish?

dan this question is one that has many answers becasue everyone has there own opinion,, for me i tend to use shellac and lacquer,, have used poly in some high use areas and it was applied by hand with a rag several light coats. oil base everything i dont use water base yet..

The finish you are talking about is actually a water borne acrylic with a very small amount of polyurethane resin added. I am not saying its a bad finish-it is what it is. An oil based varnish offers more resistance to common household chemicals and is more resistant to abrasion.

Can I get a good shellac or lacquer at Home Depot? Minwax has some options it looks like! Can I put a Lacquer finish over Poly?
