This is a piece of sycamore from the lady next door. Ellie likes her eye shadow, so I figured I'd try coloring a piece of her sycamore to match. The outside is colored with various combinations of blue and purple dye, with some white pearl acrylic airbrush paint tossed in for good measure. The walls are a bit less than 1/8" thick, so there was a bit of bleed-through of the first coat of dye around the rim and in the end grain. After coloring, the inside got a coat of Formby's Tung Oil finish, then after that cured the whole thing got multiple coats of rattle-can lacquer. I left the inside a matte finish, and wet sanded and buffed the outside to a high gloss. It ended up 8 1/4" wide and 2" tall. This one was pretty much an experiment to play around with layered colors and selective sanding. It has some flaws, so it won't be for sale, but I think Ellie will like owning it.

Thanks, guys.

Stu, I used an airbrush this time. I'm still trying to get the hang of operating it. (And between the crack cocaine and Internet porn, I simply don't have time for my soaps anymore.) :rofl:

I really love the blue and yellowish/orange combination, I think you should pursue more on this line with some other designs, and colours.
I know that they will take more time due to the finish but maybe you could sell them at a bit higher price than the others

I think the dyw adds a punch to the piece difficult to beat with a non dyed piece.

Great job Vaughn!:thumb::thumb:

Thanks again, guys. Before I give it to Ellie, I'm going to take some photos of it in open sunlight. The pics don't really show the "bowling ball" gloss on the outside. It's not a thick, wet look like polyurethane can have, but more of a thin, lacquered piano look. Wet sanding the cured lacquer with 600 grit and mineral spirits before buffing worked well. More later on my new buffing routine. ;)

Here are a couple new photos that show the reflectiveness of the outside finish a bit better, with a bit truer color representation...
