My son just told me his AVG expired and he needs to replace it with a free firewall. I suggested ZoneAlarm but he says it and his laptop don't like each other. He is using Vista. Any recommendations?

You mention anti-virus and firewall as if they are interchangeable, they're not ;-). Vista being what it is, would lean me toward running the Windows FW. For AV I have used Norton for over a dozen years and have none of the problems I so often hear of so, that would be my AV choice.

Is he running a router on his system? I've never seen one that doesnt have a built in firewall, and they are way more reliable than a software one.

I've used a router on my system for many years for isolation. I had a McAfee license for several years, but have been using Free AVG for the past few years with excellent results. I changed to a wireless router three years ago rather than run a cable to my shop, still with excellent results.
