There's a separate switch for heat, we don't use it most of the time. We have electric heat here at the town home, so no need to run it. I've got a generator that it will run off of in the case of emergencies. The plasma puts off as much heat as the fireplace anyway....run the TV vs. Fireplace in emergencies
