The Rebirth of a Hoosier Cabinet, DONE, final pic

It is a beaut, not as lucky nor as close as Tom, but have seen it without its finish. He is a master craftsman folks! He walks the walk as well as talks the talk!!! Good job Larry, looking forward to seeing it after it is sprayed and reassembled. What did they finally decide on?

the BASE is complete

well we have got the center section done and we need a place to put it and to show why the extra amount of wood in it:) there again i will answer any questions as to what, why, where or when:thumb::thumb:
tn_forum-1a.jpg tn_forum-2a.jpg tn_forum-3a.jpg

this is where the ceter section goes on top of the base. the white pieces are hmvw plastic for long term sliding, the top comes off in its own unit to replace or clean under it in the future after it gets back together i will show that detail.

I will second that too. Go ahead please Alan I for one would love to see what you have done.:):thumb:

Oh and Larry i think those legs are just BOOOOTIFUL.:thumb:

They add a perfect height and their touch is elegant imho.

I looked at your draw slides and wondered mmmm would these bind when the moisture gets in. Then i saw the next pic and i see how you solved the problem with the grain orientation. See i is learning from ya.;):D:wave::thumb:

I just got to say though the top for me .....well i like wood.:(

Oh yeah i been meaning to ask what does the title mean and whats it origin. Is this an American thing. I aint heard of a cabinet called this before? I can google it but i prefer to hear it from my buddies than that machine.

Rob not a american thing as far as i no.:dunno:
Great looking cab Larry but as rob said don't no what the title means. Is it got to do with quilting?

the "Hoosier" was broad term for kitchen cabinety in the fortys and early fifity's before we got the style we have today. they also went by baking cupboards. there were many manufactures and Hoosier was the brand that stuck on the name of the style. there were Sellers, Boone and many others at the time..they used these to hold there flour and all of there baking needs,,the reason for the metal top rob, is ease of gettin things cleaned up and to let good things like cookiess cool after they are baked..they do seem to disappear though at times.. this one wont have the bins like the old one did its been transformed into modern day usefullness by me..and the legs came with the hardware kit so i cant take credit for them. although after seeing them i could have made them as well as they were in the box:rolleyes: we reworked them alittle.

I even bookmarked this one!

They were quite the baking area. Oh, the top is generally porcelain and it pulls out for a larger area to roll out dough.

Thanks Jonathan now that ya showed me them i have seen them many times.:thumb: Just never new they were called that.

the tambour completes the top section.

i was going to make the tambour but got a link to where i could by it already made for a fair price, time is money even in a hobby.i got it delivered by the brown truck and when i opened it i realized that there idea of hardware wasnt gonna work..so i came up with my own idea after looking at a couple of the orginals out there. i needed to make a track for it to ride in and have the right radius for it to roll smoothly, and both sides needed to be the same. so i took and made a pattern from one of the old ones for the radius.
tn_tambour-1.jpg tn_tambour-2.jpg

transferred that to two pieces of wood that i stuck together with double sided tape and then cut and shaped both of them at once,,providing me with two exactly the same curvature and thickness.. i resawed them on the table saw to the desired thickness that would go with my existing frame..
tn_tambour-3.jpg tn_tambour-4.jpg

and it worked great no hitches and rolled smoothly.. put a piece in the back of it to help it roll down rather than hit square on and i was good to go..so here are the pics to prove it and the final project in the raw state..the finish isnt on this pic but is now and will get final pics tommrrow..
