This thread strongly resembles the many discussions I see at DPR. A great forum but there isn't enough time in life to read much of it.
As a former professional photog who started back in the Speed Graphic 4x5 slide days, I have opted to no longer carry a back breaking load of equipment around with me. I am mightily impressed with the technology being packed into smaller and smaller digi cams these days. My desire to get the mostest in the littlest led to my purchase of the Olympus SP800UZ recently. It does have some downfalls, so I am not recommending it but only using as an example. It has 14 mp and a 30:1 zoom that goes out to 822mm in a 35mm film camera equivalent. With a dual stabilization system I can full zoom and get sharp images hand held. Freakin' amazing.
I did get a supplemental flash unit with radio activated wireless capability. I also got a radio activated wireless remote shutter (?) release.
With these, I'm sure I have near-DLSR capabilities without the weight.
Sumptin' to consider before making the next purchase.
BTW, Ned said, in part: "......you won't be able to blow up to poster size...."
I have two 24"X36" prints in my TV room taken with my old Sony (6mp) DSC-H2. These are from cropped images. They were printed by a local shop on a special plotter (when they get to a certain size they are no longer called 'printers', don't ask me why.) They are sharp beyond belief. And they defy everything I know, or have known, about 'blowing up' or enlarging photos. I'm an old veteran of the wet darkroom who has stepped through the magic time warp machine. I don't understand it but am happy to enjoy it.
