Why Change the Name

How many use a spell checker on this forum?
How many should use a spell checker this forum?
How many just don't care about spelling?
Wish I could spell without the help of a spell checker.

Paul,

Here's a little ditty we used to use in writing centers ;)

"Eye halve a spelling chequer
It came with my pea sea
It plainly marques four my revue
Miss steaks eye kin knot sea.

Eye strike a key and type a word
And weight four it two say
Weather eye am wrong oar write
It shows me strait a weigh.

As soon as a mist ache is maid
It nose bee fore two long
And eye can put the error rite
Its rare lea ever wrong.

Eye have run this poem threw it
I am shore your pleased two no
Its letter perfect awl the weigh
My chequer tolled me sew. "

Alas, I'm afraid there's just no hope. I personally can't spell to save my life...

Thanks,

Bill

Something that gets under my skin rather quickly is changing the name of a tool over a period of time but it seems some people are dead set on doing just that.

Chop Saw and Miter Saw for example. Two different tools used for a purpose about as far apart as one can get.

Then we get to the Jig Saw, Scroll Saw
and Saber Saw. Those saw names have been screwed around over the years until I have no idea what to call one.

Why in the world can't we just stay with the names they were given by the inventor?

Rant over and I feel better now. Well almost.

An O is in the alphabet and a 0 is in our numbering system. Saying O for 0 in my opinion is just pure laziness and probably the most often mistake made in our English speech. Professional reporters are even on the band wagon on this one.

Now I really feel gooder/better.:D

the O and the 0 can look the same at time--adding a line to the 0 will stop the confusing/// which of the following are correct " 9ii or 911--a lot of people dial the phone thus " 9II instead of dialing 911

My country, Canada is #8, please also notice the ranking of the United States of America.... Oh yeah, your country does not HAVE an official language, so you don't rate on the list

Press one for English......

My point?

English is spoken by 1,860,570,082 people in the world, or at least in they live in countries that the "Official" language is English. You can bet that there will be a LOT of different ways to say things.

In fact a saying I've heard before is "The United States of America, one nation, divided by a common language" or something to that effect.:D

One size does NOT fit all folks

um, vaughn, in binary 10 is one, 01 is 2, as in 0100 0000....:rofl::rofl::rofl:

You might want to check your math, Dan:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binary_numeral_system

Binary 10 is decimal 2.

Bart, they understand each other just fine, and a lot of other English-speakers around the world understand them, too. But it's OK, we probably sound funny to them, too. :p

I can't believe Larry M. has not put his 'personal' :) spin on this thread!

Count on your fingers in binary. When you get to four, aka 0100, make sure folks around you know you are 'just' counting in binary! :)

I was once in a meeting with 3 guys from India. At one point I suggested they could just talk in their native language. They found this quite funny as they were all from different regions in India and the only language they had in common was English... So we continued in English...

One bit of syntax I've noticed on bulletin boards is that people sometimes leave out "to be", as in "This stock needs planed". The first few times I thought it was a typo, but I've seen it too many times now. I'm curious whether anyone has actually heard that in spoken English. Is it regional?

Another thing that bothers me, though I know it to be completely unreasonable, is the distinction between silicon and silicone. I know it's unreasonable for a non-chemist to know the difference, but silicon is an element that shows up in electronic components, silicon carbide, silicon bronze, as an oxide in silica, etc. Silicones comprise a class of substances that do have silicon in them, but tend to be oils, greases and rubbers. It's only the oils and greases that can interfere with finishing.
