Electrical question

I think I burnt out a ballast in one of my shop fluorescent fixtures. This is a 96" high output T-12 cold start. What i am wondering is if I can replace the ballast with 2 48" T-12 ballasts. I happen to have a box of them that i picked up at a salvage place. They are rated at 48 watts whereas the burnt out ballast runs 2 110 watt bulbs. I was thinking I might be able to put 2 of the smaller ballasts in the fixture and wire them to run just one bulb each.

Any wisdom on the subject?
