Plane blade direction

As a general rule, block planes have the bevel facing up, and bench planes have the bevel facing sown.

Spokeshaves usually have the bevel up.

One rule that pretty much always applies is that, if the blade has a logo on it, it goes into the plane with the bevel facing up.
 
Jim, I'd like to clarify your point about spokeshaves.

LA spokeshaves - the old ones made of wood are bevel up. Metal Stanleys like 151's and 51's, LN, and LV [but not the LA types] are bevel down.
