Last weekend LOML and I went to the LA County Fair with a couple of friends. Although this fair doesn't have the various art and craft competitions that many fairs do, this year there were a few interesting pieces of woodworking shown in the art exhibition gallery.

This trip was also a chance to try out our new little Sony point and shoot camera. It's a DSC-H70 that was an employee anniversary gift my wife got at work. It's a real simple little box, but it seems to take pretty decent photos and it has a pretty cool panorama feature that shows promise. All of these shots are straight off the camera, with no color or lighting correction.

(You can click the panorama shots below to see bigger versions, but beware they are up to 2.5 MB in size.)

In no order of importance...

Wood carvings by Osvaldo and Michael Orellana:

Wood carvings by Hy Farber. He's a 90-something year old guy who laminates stacks of Home Depot plywood into large blocks, then carves them into interesting industrial sculptures:

Norm Crabowski is the artist who did these intarsia rocking horses:

Not woodworking, but they had an exhibit of mid-20th century gas-powered model racing cars. (Predecessors to the infamous Cox .049 engine toys a lot of us played with as kids.)

It's apparent that there were a lot of adult enthusiasts for these cars back in the day...

And I'm guessing someone lost a bet in this photo...

We didn't see all of the things at the fair that I'd hoped to see, but I was having neck problems and one of our friends was having knee and ankle problems, so we called it a day a bit sooner than planned. We did notice that the number and variety of retail vendors (the Sham-Wow and Miracle Shoe Cleaner guys) in the shopping pavilions was down from previous years, and in fact, they have completely removed one of the retail areas and moved some of the midway rides into that area. (With parking lots expanded into the old midway area.)

The carvings of the stagecoach and horse in the rocker, heck all of the rockers, really tripped my trigger as well as the rocking horses and donkey!!! It all was amazingly excellent work. Thank you so much for sharing it! :thumb::thumb:

Yeah, the stagecoach carving is amazing. Here's a link to a much bigger version of the photo. After it's displayed in your browser, left-click it once to see an even bigger view.

Wow is all i can say. WOW WOW WOW.

I had the same thoughts as you Jonathan. That stage is enough to captivate the imagination and have you day dreaming in front of it.

Thanks a ton for showing us the pics Vaughn.:thumb:

Were these items for sale?

As to the rockers are they for use or meant as ornament. Just complicating things as usual thinking through the grain and thickeness and my back leaning against it as i try get something out my jeans pocket while seated.

Those metal cars sent my creative juices buzzing. Oh boy i dont have the money or time to get into all i would like to have a go at. Can you imagine taking a piece of metal and bashing and brazing one of those out.

Heck i would take it to a local scout group and say bring on your cub cars boys.:rofl::rofl:

Thanks for the tour Vaughn.:thumb:

Neat little camera Vaughn. I like that panorama setting.

But the carvings! Wow! Some of those things are HUGE and just so creative.

Thanks for sharing! :thumb:

I think I have seen the coach at one of the woodworking shows before. You are bound to be amazed no matter how many times you see it though. Rockers were great too. Thanks for posting the pics.
