Last weekend LOML and I went to the LA County Fair with a couple of friends. Although this fair doesn't have the various art and craft competitions that many fairs do, this year there were a few interesting pieces of woodworking shown in the art exhibition gallery.
This trip was also a chance to try out our new little Sony point and shoot camera. It's a DSC-H70 that was an employee anniversary gift my wife got at work. It's a real simple little box, but it seems to take pretty decent photos and it has a pretty cool panorama feature that shows promise. All of these shots are straight off the camera, with no color or lighting correction.
(You can click the panorama shots below to see bigger versions, but beware they are up to 2.5 MB in size.)
In no order of importance...
Wood carvings by Osvaldo and Michael Orellana:
Wood carvings by Hy Farber. He's a 90-something year old guy who laminates stacks of Home Depot plywood into large blocks, then carves them into interesting industrial sculptures:
Norm Crabowski is the artist who did these intarsia rocking horses:
Not woodworking, but they had an exhibit of mid-20th century gas-powered model racing cars. (Predecessors to the infamous Cox .049 engine toys a lot of us played with as kids.)
It's apparent that there were a lot of adult enthusiasts for these cars back in the day...
And I'm guessing someone lost a bet in this photo...
We didn't see all of the things at the fair that I'd hoped to see, but I was having neck problems and one of our friends was having knee and ankle problems, so we called it a day a bit sooner than planned. We did notice that the number and variety of retail vendors (the Sham-Wow and Miracle Shoe Cleaner guys) in the shopping pavilions was down from previous years, and in fact, they have completely removed one of the retail areas and moved some of the midway rides into that area. (With parking lots expanded into the old midway area.)
