What Is This??

I know nothing about it's age, and even less about it's purpose. I’m not even sure it’s a woodworking tool.

The wedge and ring are steel, and the split piece is some kind of wood.

We're not even sure if it's assembled correctly.

It’s been suggested that it might be a “feather & wedge set”, used the cut/break stone. But the wood on this thing is as smooth as a baby's butt (top to bottom). I just can't believe it's ever been driven into a hole in a rock.

IMO, this this has never used on stone....it's just too smooth.

I talked the people again this morning. They have another guy trying to find out what it is, too. His thoughts....maybe it was used in some sort of leather work. It's smooth, but not sanded smooth...more like worn smooth.

Like driving leather, or something similar into a hole.

What was used as "packing" in old wagon wheels?

To hold a ring while working on it.. (jewelry tool)

similar to what was shown in the original post.

Thanks for all of the feedback, Gentlemen.

If this thing was 1/4 it's size, I might buy the "jeweler's tool" thing. But it's two feet long and 3/4" across at the smallest point.

With all due respect, I'm still not convinced.
