Knurl on Wood?

Just a question out of curiosity. Does/has anyone knurl their turnings? I'm thinking of a coarse knurl somewhat similar to what might be seen on a metal shaft, not a wide cross-hatch. I would think the wood might crumble while trying to make the knurl impression, but perhaps someone has mastered a technique. Don't know of an application, just curious.

Thanks Guys, you've answered my questions. I didn't know if "knurling" could be done on wood. Guess it's called "texturing" in the woodworking arena.

I have seen people get a pattern similar to knurling by using a tool on the lathe that chatters - the kind of pattern we usually try to avoid. After being inspired by a demo, I ground a dead chainsaw file to a rounded point, like a scraper, so it was pretty light and prone to chatter. I tried it... it worked, but I didn't consider it THAT decorative, and am not sure I would do it routinely. But it was an interesting game.
