Linda is out of the starting stalls and going down the main straight on her hoiday carving project. To date she has been battling along with the make do el cheapo Japanese short tip chisels i had picked up on ebay years ago.

But today i took another trip to a woodcraft in Woburn (this time after calling first and verifying stock. :)

So this set of pfeil came home with me and since these hand tools were on sale they did too. Nice store this particular one and well stocked and helpful guys. So the carving can now begin. Will grow the set as the bug bites this is a vortex just like spinny work. :)

Good tools. :thumb:
Now, your next question will be: "How do I sharpen a 'V' chisle?"
Let me make it easy for you: It can't be done, impossible.
I have one that was 'sharpened' many times by several "experts" but was really never sharp. They did manage to shorten it by more than an inch. Finally, one day, I took it to Todd, he turned on the fine grit wheel and went zip for a couple seconds and it is now very sharp. How is a mystery to me. But he knows what he is doing.

Darren she has to learn to hold the chisel properly and secure her work. Toni sent a book for guidance and i have no mercy for her if she aint going to listen and learn proper technique. My missus has her own mind at times and mules dont come close to being as stubborn. So as the Afrikaner says " As jy nie will luister nie dan moet jy voel" translated it says " if you dont want to listen then you gonna have to feel (the pain essentially ;))

Did not take long after seeing them yesterday we added two more to the set today. Sorry no pics.

The other thing is she has to learn to sharpen and strop. I aint playing mr sharpener for her. This is an equal opportunity pastime we are planning to share. My name is not Friday from the Robinson Crusoe story. :)

Hi Frank, sorry to say it but your own words contradict what you say. You say that it is impossible but then Todd made it in a wink, so it is not impossible.:p.
I admit that the "V" tool is the most difficult one to sharpen but it is not impossible. The trick is dividing the sharpening in stages as if you were sharpening three normal chisels. Chris Pye had a free downloadable pdf sheet in his former web that shows it pretty well, although it seems that he's removed those tips from the new one he has.

His old site: http://web.archive.org/web/20080705144238/http://chrispye-woodcarving.com/?

The pdf's: http://web.archive.org/web/20080514203852/http://www.chrispye-woodcarving.com/slipstones/pdfs.html

Got to love archive.org...well, except when you own a blog and rant about something you wish you hadn't. :D

Yes it is Darren, thanks a lot, in Frank's behalf and mine as well. Rob I'd suggest you to download them as well.
