5 axis CNC art

Incredible. So many thoughts about this. Cant help but wonder what Michael Angelo might have thought of this or done with this capability.

CNC Machines are great and a goodd way of saving time and repeatability. The only problem is that the 3D model has to be drawn and that is not an easy task, even with specialised and very expensive software. N.U.R.B.S.* Modelling can be very, very time consuming if one is proficient in the use of the software, and we musn't forget that all these are only tools. First there must be an idea or concept of what one wants to achieve and express or capture it in whatever media of choice, be it paper, clay or virutal 3D CAD drawing. Call me old school if you want, but I'm faster sketching ideas on paper than in a PC although I see the advantages. Lately I'm using 3dSketchPro to make the same sketches I do on paper, and I'm still faster on paper but that's because I'm learning to use the tool.

That is very impressive. However, after roughing out the figure I'm curious why there wasn't a switch to a smaller diameter tool since with wood there isn't that much side loading, or deflection to the tool, or material. I would think that even with many more passes, it would result in finer detail. Also, as fragile as this figure is in places, what is the best wood for these types of figures to prevent breakage & produce the best finish?

Ohhhh - there are hoards of stuff going on there.

What pushes me up to that level?

Yes - everything.

Toni - talked about the computer model to be used to create the program.

In the whole process:

1) The concept - design and create a model - but digitally - VERY technical and difficult to do.
The software to create the model is quite technical and requires a high level of skill

2) Programming from the model once created.
Again the software used to create the 5 axis program is complex and high skill level stuff

3) Getting the machine to do it.
Skill in how to use and operate a CNC machine at this level is a challenge in itself.

I have worked in 4-5 axis machining but not on artistic stuff like this.

This is the stuff that drives me.

I just find this intriguing.
