Many years ago, in old Singapore, a lumber merchant named Chan kept many types of wood in his warehouse, and sold them as needed to various customers. Over a couple of months when he was doing his monthly inventory, he noticed that his supplies of teak were being depleted at a faster rate than they should be. He realized that someone was stealing this precious wood, and because it could not be done in the daytime when so many people were watching the stock, it must be happening at night.

So, one night, Chan stationed himself in the warehouse in a place where he could be concealed, but could see the teak. About midnight, a small boy, without shoes and wearing only shorts, crept into the shop through a small opening. He selected a choice piece, all he could carry, and started back towards his entrance, when the owner leapt from his hiding place and cried, "Stop, O barefoot boy with teak of Chan!"
