Anyone in the general vicinity around there next weekend? I'm tacking on the weekend after a work trip to the Lenoir area and was looking at touring around south of Asheville over the weekend. Figured I'd see if there was anyone in the area interested in a quick meet up. We don't have a set schedule... but wanted to see a little country in the area while there.

We visited the Biltmore a couple of years back and you're right it is definitely worth a visit! One of the perhaps lesser known bits is that Gifford Pinchot was the first manager and that was basically where the birth of the national Forest system was born (the bulk of the land is now the pisgah national Forest).

The area around Hendersonville was interesting they had a lot more farm and fruit stand than I'd seen in most of that country. A few pretty good breweries as well :D. One of particular note was Fonta Flora in Morganton http://fontaflora.com, they're using mostly local ingredients and making and making some of the more interesting beer in the area. Some of there beers sound a bit weird but they were all extremely well made. I serendipitously met the brewer a couple years ago before they opened when he was doing a west coast tour, nice fellow and knows his stuff.

No meet ups but I did stop in to see Allen Davis (http://www.winchesterwoodworks.net) who has a ton of his segmented work and a nice array of pens out. He was doing an artist in residence type deal for the week at the Moses Cone estate (http://www.blueridgeheritage.com/attractions-destinations/moses-cone-manor) which has been converted into a really nice craft center/park. Really nice stuff and a great guy to talk to. It was very interesting to talk about how he has his shop setup for production segmented work (basically a whole army of presetup compound mitre saws and disk sanders). Did I mention how nice his work was? Bears repeating :D
