What do most of us have in our tool boxes or shops that would be good to make some simple turning tools like a detail tool? Do allen wrenches have decent steel? Any suggestions welcome.

I can't speak for turning tools, but I've made 'specialty' cutters for a router plane out of Allen wrenches. The steel is quite hard, but still not brittle. YMMV...

Rob Keeble made me a router plane with an sharpened allen wrench as a blade. Incredibly sharp

+1 for allen wrenches, I made a set of ring cutters out of a couple and they work really well.
I recently made an angle scraper out of an old planet blade and man was that hard stuff!! Took forever to bring on the small high speed grinder with a coarse wheel. Works like a charm though (I bought a while stack of old blades at an auction for.. I think.. $2).
