Well That didn't last long

Don't toss it. Pieces like that are good candidates for jam/friction chucks of various sizes. I have a drawer full of 'em in various stages of "bowlness".

OK, I won't, but I AM going to rechuck it with the face plate (I used my pin jaws and it wobbled fairly frequently). Ash, rock hard despite the cracks.

IMO, pin jaws are not a good way to mount a bowl blank. I know some guys swear by them, but I swear AT them, lol. The wobble you experienced with this one (and the one the other day) show why I have that opinion. I much prefer regular jaws (preferably dovetail) in compression on a tenon.

One thing to keep in mind of you're using this later as a jam/friction chuck it you should plan on needing to re-true it each time you put it back on the lathe. Each time I use one of mine, it gets a little smaller as I true it up (and often change the shape to fit the piece I'm finishing the bottom on.). I wouldn't even bother putting in on a faceplate until you need it. ;)
