Some Cutting Boards

My dad is doing a holiday craft/art show this coming weekend and the past 3 yrs I did it with him. This year I was supposed to be out of town, but that changed last week. I knew I didn't have time to turn anything and get it finished, so I finished up some cutting boards I had glued up a few weeks ago. I'll have about 20 of them ready to go along with some older bowls and smaller items. The pics show a couple of the finished boards. The one with 3 spalted hackberry plugs developed a crack after the glue up so I'm hoping the plugs will stabilize it. Think it will work? There is another one that had a small chunk pop out while I was sanding it so I drilled it out and put in another plug. My dad has made some really stunning hollow forms, bowls, xmas ornaments and more. Looking forward to spending some time in the booth with him too. :)

Those are some nice looking boards, Jeff! They should sell with no problem.

The plugs add interest to the board but my concern would be whether they hold over the long haul if the crack stresses much. The glue surface might be enough; butterflies would hold better but the plugs look nicer I think.

Nice work, Jeff. :thumb:

My concern about the cracked board would be that food and moisture can get into the crack and become a bacterial smorgasbord. I think I'd be inclined to fill it with black epoxy just to keep things out of it.

DOH!! :doh:Why didn't I think of that!!! Well....I won't have time to do that before the weekend, so I'll just have to keep this one home until I have time to do that. :(

Bill, the plugs are almost 3/4 the thickness of the board so I think they should hold ok...I was on a time crunch and knocked these out pretty quick. I've got some slab tables and other projects that I hope to use some butterflies on soon.
