It's 1/8" flat aluminum that I purchase in 1" wide strips. Cut to length on the TS and drill on the lathe prior to gluing up.

I like the aluminum accents. I have not tried that yet on pens. I've turned a number of tool handles and use either brass compression fittings or copper couplers for ferrules. Both turn really nicely. The brass fittings look so much better than the commercially available formed brass ferrules available for tool handles.
