No, I milled the cherry to its final profile, then cut the slot (dado) for the inlay - about 1/8" deep. Then cut the maple strips to fit the slot. After that, I cut the miters for the assembly.
Used 'mini biscuits' to reinforce the miters. That little Ryobi mini biscuit jointer comes in handy sometimes. I don't use it often, but it's nice to have for stuff like this.

I think that image would also make a nice embroidered piece if it was made into one. Would give it a 3D look.
