I wasn't going to upgrade at all when I saw what the express upgrade did, then I finally found the custom upgrade, very small print hidden in the corner, and turned off practically all the invasions listed.
Honestly, no need to update if you're happy. I did so to keep under the upgrade support until 2020, but will probably replace most of the hardware long before then.
I did an hardware upgrade to a Surface 3 - the Microsoft tablet running real Windows. I was hoping that Win X would make the tablet functions a little better, and the hint is that you have a finite time for the free upgrade. (For example the $50 optional pen is near useless).
Beware that if you upgrade from Win 8.1 you only are allowed 30 days to roll it back.
I don't know if or when I will try Win X again.
