I wanted to make a stacked text plaque for some friends, but also wanted it to be a little different from most I see and have done.

Here's what I ended up with:

This shows the layers a bit better:

To build up the board, I took a piece of cherry about 7/8" thick and re-sawed it to get a 1/10" veneer and a 1/2" base. After sanding the pieces smooth, I added a 1/10" thick piece of maple between the pieces of cherry. After sanding, the top layer of cherry and the maple came out at about 0.09". I glued the pieces together with Titebond II and clamped them overnight. In the meantime, I milled some wenge to 5/8" x 1/2" to make a frame with half-laps at each corner. Prior to starting the carve, I wiped some brown dye on the top layer of cherry to darken it. I adjusted the cut depth so the bits would cut through each layer by 0.01". Finish is a layer of waterborne sealer, two coats of waterborne clear gloss and a final coat of waterborne semi-gloss.
