From the folks at work that have done it, they estimated 3 - 4 years for payback. Maybe by that time the battery packs will have advanced even further to allow for better storage options. With today's efficiency standards, most everything is using less electricity, so shouldn't take too long to get where one can be self sufficient in some areas.

Currently my two biggest power consumers are the AC and the pool pump, the pool pump may go away in a few years if we decide to fill in the pool. The AC was just replace last year, so won't be gaining any more efficiency than I currently am using. I did see a home show where they added a transfer coil with the pool pump, which switched the flow of Freon from the AC condenser to the coil which had pool water circulating across it. It heated the pool and created cooling for the house, which sounds like an appealing option. but would take some doing to get the lines run to the opposite side of the house where the pump is.
