As Darren mentioned, you don't really need to connect the pi to a monitor or keyboard in order to configure and run octopi.

But with Raspberry Pi, you have way more options. It's actually a full fledged little computer that can do a lot of things.

In fact, if you go about installing raspbian, it's a lot easier to hook it up to a monitor via hdmi and to a keyboard mouse to configure it.

So VNC, basically is a connection to the pi that mimics those physical connections, running on your desktop.

Here is my pi zero with a camera and wifi dongle attached. IT's actually powered up and running in this picture from the micro usb plug on the right hand side.

And here is what it is doing.

The browser window on the left is connected to some camera controlling application that runs on the pi. It has a web interface that allows you to set it up to take time lapses or videos or whatever.

The window on the right is a vnc session connected to the pi showing the desktop. Just as if I had a monitor and keyboard and mouse attached to it.
